The Spanish Steps, built between 1723 and 1726 on a design by the Roman architect Francesco De Sanctis, represents the spectacular connection between the heights of the Pincio dominated by the church of SS. Trinity and the underlying Piazza di Spagna. The first projects were drawn up in 1660, including that of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, to whom we owe the concave and convex shape of the walls and the “pincer” ramps that give this masterpiece its unique architectural and ornamental characteristics.
